What is a fundamental school?
Mary W. Jackson Fundamental Elementary School serves students in grades K-5. The fundamental schools follow the same curriculum as the other Hampton City Schools. We have received numerous awards for outstanding achievement and offer opportunities such as academic enrichment programs, clubs and Student Council Association. Parents and students sign a Fundamental School Contract upon registration. Please note: No transportation is provided for students enrolled at Mary W. Jackson.
Application Process
We will begin accepting applications for the upcoming school year the Tuesday after Labor Day of the preceding year. Students are placed on the waitlist and are admitted on a first-come, first-served space available basis. Siblings of currently enrolled students are given priority off the waitlist on a space available basis. An application must be submitted for the sibling (they are not automatically placed on the waitlist). Please note that a sibling is considered a student who has one parent in common and resides in the same household. The age requirement for kindergarten entrance in Virginia is that children will have celebrated their 5th birthday by September 30th. Upon parent request, any Hampton child who will celebrate his/her 5th birthday in October or November may be eligible to register for kindergarten pending the outcome of an evaluation. Please call Virginia Saloka at 757-727-2130 as soon as possible to schedule an entrance evaluation appointment. Please note that the Language Arts Department will make the final decision regarding the child's eligibility status. Do not wait until after the evaluation to apply. Fill out the application and call the main office to advise that you are waiting on early entrance testing.
We will begin calling parents of students who will be starting Kindergarten for the upcoming school year in April. For all other grades, we will begin calling in July. You will only receive a call if your student is being offered a spot for the upcoming school year.
